It is renewable annually and is particularly popular with retirees and remote earners. However, it does not grant the right to work for a Cypriot employer. Those wishing to work locally must obtain the appropriate employment-based residence and work permit.

For those seeking a longer-term solution, the Cyprus Permanent Residency by Investment (Regulation 6.2) remains one of the island's most attractive immigration routes.

The programme generally requires:

• A minimum investment of €300,000 (plus VAT) in qualifying new residential property purchased from a developer.
• Demonstration of a secured annual income of at least €50,000, with additional income requirements applying for a spouse and dependent family members.
• Investment funds originating from outside Cyprus.

Applications are typically processed within several months, although processing times may vary depending on the circumstances of each application. The permit can extend to a spouse and eligible dependent children, while, in certain cases, parents of the main applicant or spouse may also qualify, subject to the applicable immigration requirements. To maintain permanent residency status, permit holders are generally required to visit Cyprus at least once every two years.

It is also important to distinguish immigration residency from tax residency. Holding a residence permit does not automatically make someone a Cyprus tax resident. Tax residency is determined separately under Cyprus tax legislation, primarily through the 183-day rule or, where the relevant conditions are satisfied, the 60-day rule. Depending on an individual's circumstances, Cyprus' non-dom tax regime may also offer significant tax advantages.
